The problem

Pillows. Duvets. The closet.

We've all tried it. Recording inside a closet, walls made of duvets. The result? Still echo, still that "empty room" sound. Plus a room full of clutter. Until now, the only real way to a clean recording was a studio.

FAQ

Questions on
your mind.

How big and how heavy is it?

Height 80 cm, width 65 cm. Depth is 110 cm with the visor attached, 65 cm without. Weight 7 kg; comes with a carrying bag.

How long does setup take?

About 3 minutes. Thanks to the zip system no tools are needed: open, place, start recording.

Can I use it standing?

Yes. Clip the strap from the hidden pocket at the back of the top over a door, or mount it on the wall bracket included in the box.

Does sound leak out?

VTRAP isn't an isolation booth, it's a recording booth: its job is to deliver clean sound with fewer reflections to your microphone. Even so, the independent SRL test measured up to 10 dB less leakage at high frequencies. See the report.

What is the difference between VTRAP and a microphone reflection filter?

A reflection filter only covers the back of the microphone, so room reflections still reach it from behind and beside your head. VTRAP surrounds your head and the microphone with a 7-layer acoustic wall. Hear producer Mad Steex's comparison with the same vocal in the Hear the difference section.

Is VTRAP enough for recording podcasts and voice-over at home instead of renting a studio?

In a quiet room, yes. VTRAP reduces the room echo that reaches your microphone and gives you dry recordings that are ready to edit. It costs less than a single day of studio rental and is yours for good. It is not a soundproof isolation booth, so if there is traffic or building noise nearby, choose a quiet time to record.

Can I use it in a hotel room or while travelling?

Yes. VTRAP weighs 7 kg, folds down and comes with a carry bag. It sets up in about 3 minutes without tools, on a desk or hung on a door.

Why does a recording made in an empty room sound bad?

The microphone picks up not only your voice but also its reflections, bouncing back from the walls, ceiling and desk a few milliseconds later. When these copies overlap the direct sound, some frequencies are boosted and others cancel out (comb filtering), so the voice sounds boxy and hollow. In an unfurnished room the reverberation time is usually well above the 0.5 seconds recommended for speech: syllables blur together and the recording sounds as if you were speaking from across the room. How does VTRAP technically improve recording quality?

It surrounds your head and the microphone with a 7-layer acoustic wall. An acoustically transparent fabric, foams of densities 22 and 32, a wooden diffuser and felt absorb the sound's energy step by step. Less sound reaches the room and fewer reflections come back to the microphone, so most of what it picks up comes straight from your mouth. In Dr. Kıvanç Kitapçı's analysis the booth's reverberation time measured under 0.5 seconds. The result: dry, clear recordings that are ready to process. Sources: Acoustic analysis report (2022) · ISO 16283-1

Why should audio be recorded clean? Can't the echo be removed later?

Professional recordings go through EQ, compression, de-essing, noise reduction and loudness normalisation (podcasts usually target −16 LUFS). These steps amplify everything in the recording: compression brings up the room echo between words, EQ boosts the room's resonances, and raising the level lifts the background noise. Reverb can always be added to a dry recording later, but room echo baked into a take cannot be cleanly separated, and de-reverb plug-ins make the voice sound artificial and metallic. Edits are also audible in echoey takes, and the sound cannot stay consistent across multi-day projects. Sources: Apple Podcasts · EBU R 128

What format should I record in? Why 24-bit / 48 kHz?

A 24-bit recording offers far more dynamic range than 16-bit (theoretically about 144 dB versus 96 dB). That lets you record with peaks between −12 and −18 dBFS and keep a safe margin: sudden loud moments are not clipped and quiet passages do not sink into noise. Higher bit depth also keeps the rounding errors added by processing such as EQ and compression inaudible. 48 kHz is the video and broadcast standard, and agencies and broadcasters usually ask for 24-bit / 48 kHz WAV deliveries. Source: ITU-R BS.646

Is a high-resolution recording enough on its own?

No. High resolution does not fix the room; it captures the room's echo in just as much detail. The right order is: clean acoustics first (with VTRAP only your voice reaches the microphone), then a high-resolution recording, then processing. Skip the first step and the next ones only magnify the problem. VTRAP is a recording booth, not a soundproof isolation booth: it keeps the room's echo away from the microphone but does not fully block outside noise.

How significant are the awards VTRAP has won?

VTRAP has won five international design awards, each decided by independent international juries. Red Dot, awarded since 1955, is one of the most sought-after seals of quality for good design worldwide; VTRAP won it in Product Design in 2024. The German Design Award is presented by the German Design Council, founded in 1953 at the initiative of the German Bundestag; VTRAP won in 2025 in "Excellent Product Design – Universal Design". GOOD DESIGN, one of America's oldest and most prestigious design awards, was founded in Chicago in 1950 with modern design pioneers such as Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen and George Nelson; VTRAP received it in 2025 in the Personal Experience category. The Los Angeles-based International Design Awards (IDA) have, since 2007, honoured outstanding work from around the world in architecture, interior, product, graphic and fashion design through scoring by a professional jury, and are among the world's most respected design awards; VTRAP won Bronze in 2024 in Consumer Electronics / Audio / Video Equipment. The DNA Paris Design Awards, presented in Paris, one of the world's design capitals, honour architects and designers who improve everyday life through practical, beautiful and innovative design; VTRAP was recognised in 2025 in Product Design – Design for People.
